A pergola is an overhead construction that consists of an arbor or passageway with a roof of latticework.

Most often, a pergola covers a patio, a poolside walkway, a driveway, or even a picnic or dining area. The pergola does not completely shade the area it covers, but instead allows only a portion of the sunlight to enter through its latticework roof.
