A patio cover is a roof or cover over an existing or newly constructed patio. There are no walls and its main purpose is to provide a shaded patio in the absence of other sources of shade (such as trees, etc.). The roof can be lightweight or, if desired, be made strong enough to support a porch swing. The patio cover may contain electrical wiring which would be used for lighting and/or ceiling fans.
